The A+ Arts Academy’s Language Arts & Reading Curriculum is designed to empower all of our students to become masterful in the art of eloquent expression.
After the initial assessments are complete the students begin to study effective comprehension strategies including summarization, making predictions and comparing and contrasting using a wide variety of literary genre. This includes fables, fairy tales, non-fiction, and fictional stories. As well as short stories from such distinguished authors as Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Nikki Giovanni & Sharon Draper which are used to help the students understand diverse literary concepts, styles and structures such as the development of a plot and themes; determining and describing the setting of a story; recognizing how the point of view effects perceptions of the moral value, moods, and possibly the outcome of the story as a whole. Finally, your blossoming writer will then employ comprehension strategies to interpret and validate other common literary mediums including essays and articles from newspaper and magazines.
Students will realize the use of proper grammar including the parts of speech and sentence structure and its influence to effectively communicate numerous writing processes and including the art of essay, persuasion, and debate. They learn the necessity of punctuation to clarify sentence interpretation and to help readers sense of how the writing might communicate and sound when read aloud. They develop and extend their understanding of spelling, using a range of strategies including the manipulation of phonics and Latin roots for spelling words correctly while using a fresh and mature vocabulary in their writing and presentation.
In addition to receiving the basic instruction in Language Arts, students will have an opportunity to integrate these techniques with art to share and express their abilities through intriguing project presentations such as their own children’s book, comic books, family crests, and creation of a Personal Monument. Through A+ Arts constructive teaching of reading comprehension strategies and effective speech communication our students will become the next generation of confident, intelligent, and moving journalists, novelists and spectacular orators. |
